Material: lime wood, non-toxic water based colour stain

A unique characteristic of Grimm’s wooden toys is the velvety surface resulting from the use of colour glaze that penetrates into the wood, leaving a matte finish rather than a glossy one. The individual pieces are dipped by hand into the stain and Grimm’s intentionally do not put a final protective coating on it to preserve the positive characteristics of the wood. This method guarantees that toys stack more easily with greater play possibilities, and children feel and experience the wood fibres and structure while playing.

From time to time colour transfer will result in new products that carry some excess colour pigments. Grimm’s recommend wiping the transferred surface with a wet, lint-free cloth to remove colour pigments.

Grimm’s colours are non-toxic, water based stains that are absolutely harmless and tested in-depth for colour fastness in contact with saliva. This test uses a liquid comparable to standard human saliva. However, some people’s saliva does vary from the “standard”, so some colour may transfer under those conditions, but the stains are harmless.

Grimm’s toys are inspired by the Waldorf Steiner education movement which advocates learning through thoughtful, creative play at an unhurried pace. Toys play an important part of the learning experience and Waldorf toys are made with natural materials, beautiful and simplistic – the lack of details allow children to fill in the blanks with their imaginations.  They can be used in multiple ways in creative play scenarios, rather than being prescriptive.  Waldorf toys are wonderfully tactile and call on children to play with them.

We are producing natural and sustainable wooden toys. As a result, our toys always have unique markings since wood grain has changing structures and colours which serve as proof of its natural origins. The unique variations are proof of the toy’s quality and not a defect. https://www.grimms.eu/media/pdf/ea/6b/9b/Made-by-Nature.pdf
